I called TA7/Kw8M, but he was only 519-529 and likely running some power. Just tonight inside 15 mins,on 40m CW runinng just 50w from my FT-857D while parked waiting for my son, I worked D44AC, VP2V, HA, PJ5 & 7X4AN. No trouble to work the entire east 1/2 of the USA and Carib on 80m CW.phone is a little tougher. I usually run the added 2' base, the cap hat and the longer whip. I CONSISTENTLY break small CW pileups on 20m and 40m with this. If I could give it a 4.75 I probably would, but it doesn't have any major faults at all. I give it my highest recommendation as being among the "top shelf" of ham radio gear. This antenna is a great example of "pay a little more upfront, get a LOT more return on your investment later!" Install it exactly as the well-written manual clearly describes, remember to ground-ground-ground it well, and this antenna REALLY talks. While I've tried several smaller sized roof mount antennas including the ATAS series with mixed success, there's just NO substitute for the 1800PRO and the high quality 6 foot whip that Jim sells with the 1800 series. HS's engineering deserves high praise for an excellent design on this antenna. 5 years old and it still looks just like it was new! Just like the ads say, HS uses the highest quality hardware, brass and professional grade automotive paint - no corrosion, not a paint flaw anywhere after 5 years of hard use by the previous owner! The interior of the tube was still spotless - the well-designed weatherseal kept all the rain and ice and snows of 4 winters out of the parts that make it work. Recently overhauled a used 1800PRO that I found on eBay. Quality always wins.Įarlier 5-star review posted by KK8ZZ on these were great antennas in their time, perhaps, but note that they're no longer made, nor have then been at their usual booth at Dayton for 3 years. neither one lasted long.just didn't hold up in harsh winters, too much corrosion, and the goofy "car trailer" power connectors were so cheap compared to the quality of the Tarheel antenna line. Regular 5/7 5/9 reports and many comments of I don’t believe you are a mobile station, I sometimes add my SGC Smart Cube and believe me that’s a whole different ball game occasionally breaking into pile ups but not been a contest operator that’s not all that often, it’s a shame they went out of production but I did buy a second one while they where available just to have a backup one They are easy to maintain and repair and it certainly out performs myĪtas 120 but if course that is a completely different antenna. One modification I did was to make an extension tube to get the coil above the roof of my Motorhome. I can honestly say it’s the best antenna I have used, I do do regular maintenance such as greasing the inner screw and checking all connections also wax the main body. I bought HS Platinum 1800 around fifteen years ago and what an amazing antenna, it has been on numerous vehicles including my Motorhome.
